絲 路 幻 想

Silk Road Fantasy

In the time before the Common Era,

a river flowing through past and present

ushered in the meeting of East and West.

Geographers bestowed upon it the most beautiful name:

the Silk Road.

Amidst treacherous landscapes and endless journeys,

wars, expeditions, survival, and farewells unfolded.

How many splendid cultures were nurtured and passed on?

How many tragic tales vanished with the wind?

The heavens granted unparalleled beauty and legend,

engraving the stream of history with irreplaceable marks.

This is the sound of strings from eternity.

Golden sands swirling,

a journey begun may never see its end.

This farewell may be forever;

Today, perhaps the last day of this lifetime.

Why not walk freely under heaven and earth,

savor the moment, lift a cup in song,

toast the vast skies,

and dance with the sun, moon, and stars!

此別 或為永別;
今日 或為今生最後一天

何不瀟灑行走於天地
享受當下 把酒高歌
與蒼天對飲
與日月星辰共舞

PROGRAM NOTES

Long before the Han dynasty (202 BC–220 AD), networks of trade and cultural exchange already linked the regions of East and West through a series of overland routes. The term “Silk Road” was coined in the 19th century by German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen. In the Han dynasty, the diplomat Zhang Qian’s missions significantly expanded and formalized these connections, ushering in a flourishing era of East–West exchange. While the name “Silk Road” often evokes romantic and exotic imagery, the reality was far more perilous. The route was fraught with life-threatening conditions and politically unstable territories. Many envoys and merchants who set out never returned. Ethnic minorities along the route endured harsh environments, yet cultivated distinctive and resilient cultures. For many who lived under these conditions, life may have been lived for the present—embracing feasts and drink, knowing that tomorrow was never promised.

In Silk Road Fantasy, the work conjures vivid and unbridled imagery across this historic route through the expressive power of string ensemble writing. Introduced by the sonorous voice of the solo double bass, the music gazes upon the survival and migration of diverse peoples and the precious cultures of minority communities. The main melody, woven into the double bass’s lyrical line, emerges within the evolving textural landscape and structural flow, manifesting as fragmentation, sequence, layering, and extension. The solo double bass, joined gradually by each instrument in an interlaced web of sound—lingering and spiraling through time—evokes a chant borne of the ancestors and the boundless sky, a tone of remembrance and reverence.

Through a palette of designed tone colors between harmony and dissonance, marked by call-and-response exchanges, the work expands the strings’ extraordinary virtuosity and expressive breadth, sculpting a unique, exotic soundscape imbued with rich ethnic colors and cultural inflections. In its splendid exploration and integration of battuto, pizzicato, strumming, col legno, glissando, and open strings, the work is suffused with majestic expanse and untamed vitality—revealing countless untold stories of travelers and indigenous peoples along the Silk Road, while also portraying profound spiritual depth and a free-spirited embrace of life. Shaped by a nuanced play of tension and release, each episode possesses a distinct narrative while remaining tightly interwoven within an unbroken continuity of shared essence and aesthetic. Across the work, the music unfolds in a profusion of dynamic colors and shifting harmonic rhythms, portraying the imagery of the Silk Road and the voices of its peoples, suggesting a dialogue spanning the ancient and the present. This piece also stands as a voice of tribute, honoring the rich culture and the travelers who once journeyed along its route.

Silk Road Fantasy is featured on Apple Chang’s debut composition album Blossom—winner of Best Art Music Album at the 2025 Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music (GMATAM)—with nominations for Best Producer and Best Recording.
