Across unfurling waves of sound,
We witness countless tales of unwavering love
through the tempests of history;
Blooming like sakura
We dance with the geisha and step into
The layered shadows of their inner world;
We sing with minorities and ancestral voices echoing along the Silk Road;
We follow three spiritual notes of
the unknown bird
That wanders beyond our shores;
Sublime on the towers of her skiey bowers,
We traverse with the immortal cloud
over earth and ocean.
Carrying History, Engaging the Present
Blossom embodies a profound connection to historical memory and humanistic reflection. Composed and produced by Apple Chang in response to turbulent times, this debut album pays tribute to the resilience of life. Distilling her Taiwanese roots and tempered by a decade in New York, Apple Chang crafts five evocative works—portraying those who have weathered the tides of history, persevering through war and change with tenacity and devotion to life, in love, family, friendship, or deep bonds to homeland—regardless of role or identity, known or unknown
“During my grandfather’s final days battling cancer, he once gripped my hand tightly and urgently shouted, ‘Go hide in the shelter.’ My grandmother told me a timely warning once led her to escape an attack by the distance of a single building, yet she witnessed air raids and strafing firsthand.”
The birth of Blossom arose from Apple Chang’s deep contemplation of a world marked by conflict and escalating upheaval in recent years— a time she revisited the enduring strength of her grandparents who carried the weight of World War II. Through uniting artists of global prominence and cultural diversity, with recording sessions held across Taipei and New York, the album not only stands as a testament to the expressive force of classical music, but also a voice of resistance against the devastation of war—affirming the enduring values of peace, freedom, and human dignity.

Blossom That Remembers, Resonates, and Renews
The cross-national collaboration on recording and post-production manifests Apple’s conviction: to explore and challenge new sonic textures, bridging geographic distance and fostering synergy between distinct musical philosophies, which in turn resonates with the core spirit of Blossom. Among the many artists who carried this vision forward was Eugene Drucker, former principal violinist of the Emerson String Quartet, the nine-time GRAMMY Award–winning ensemble. Forged through the convergence of refined composition and embodied interpretation, the production constructs a form of sonic storytelling—evoking renewed historical awareness and existential introspection—a sound that awakens moments of strength, healing, and inspiring light, ultimately returning to the world as a quiet yet enduring current.

The five pieces explores diverse and innovative formats, including three instrumental works — Sakura Rain, The Geisha, and Silk Road Fantasy — along with two vocal works — The Unknown Bird and The Cloud, set the poetry of British poets Edward Thomas and Percy Bysshe Shelley for voice and piano trio. Each piece possesses a distinct and vivid identity, yet they are intricately connected through a cohesive artistic narrative, with motifs evolving through variations in lyrical texture and structural development.
Interlaced with a subtle three-note cell, symbolizing the three syllables of “sa-ku-ra,” Sakura Rain breathes with a profound ethos and timeless grace. In crafting instrumental gestures and the exquisiteness of the Koto repertoire traditions, the work weaves a singular dialogue within the orchestral texture, honoring steadfast love amid historical upheavals and wartime, like the bloom and fall of sakura—brief yet radiant. Rooted in the miyako-bushi scale, The Geisha thrives in the collision of cultural elements, blending classical instruments with traditional geisha performance music. Infused with a sobbing tune, the piece conveys a reflective portrayal of both the dance and the soul within, paying tribute to this unique culture and to those who have lived as geisha throughout history. Silk Road Fantasy opens with the sonorous voice of solo double bass, conjuring the unbridled imagery across this historical path and the free-spirited embrace of life. By exploring the strings’ agility and expression, the work sculpts a landscape of spiritual and folk-like colors, honoring the rich culture and the travelers who once journeyed along its route.
In The Unknown Bird, the music portrays the delicate beauty of the verse through elaborate melodic lines. Transported by a three-note motif, developed and expanded within soprano’s line and trio, the music echoes the first phrase and symbolic depth embedded within the poem, evoking an ethereal atmosphere, while bearing the weight of the emotions beneath—a tribute to fearless, unrepentant voices. In "The Cloud," Percy Bysshe Shelley encapsulates the eternal cycle of nature, where transformation and renewal are constant, yet the essence remains indestructible. Setting “The Cloud” to music, the work channels the soul back to the universe, concluding the eternal cycle of nature. Building upon the harmonic rhythm and expansive flow of the trio and soprano-mezzo duet, its lyrical episodes unfold with dramatic intensity, reflecting those whose souls transform in form, yet whose essence endures.
Vitality Sings and Legacy Breathes
Blossom embodies a defining compositional voice of Apple Chang—an internalized dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures that reimagines the expressive scope of both classical and contemporary idioms. The five works unveil a singular musical aesthetic, expanding instrumental gestures and textural dimensions while unleashing the nuanced expressivity of human voice and breath. Imbued with the cultural essences of qi (vital energy) and liubai (leaving blank), the music transcends conventional frameworks and unfolds new artistic chapters within chamber music—rooted in heritage yet propelled by visionary foresight.
Beyond the score, these approaches illuminate the album’s emotional weight and core philosophy. Blossom transforms music into a bridge spanning past and present, revoicing inherited resonance and transhistorical meaning. In times of upheaval, Blossom emerges as both timely and essential—opening a window into the soul of life, rising beyond generations, race, nations, and the borders of time.
Threaded in ensemble form,
Five works
Awakens the delicacy and latent power of chamber music,
Yet, through striking craftsmanship, it transcends its dimension—
We soar through epic color and dynamic force on a symphonic scale,
Unfurled by a new horizon of the sonic world,
that transfigures borders of time,
blossoming in a living sound.
Blossom stands as a deliberate artistic statement—rooted in Apple Chang’s personal writings and introspective vision, it awakens strength, rekindles connection, and returns warmth to the world.

The gray-brown on the edges of the album
is the color of sakura blossoms,
unfolding from the spring mud and branches
that have endured a harsh winter.
It is the true bamboo of a geisha’s paper umbrella and fan,
the fragrance of paulownia wood from the shamisen.
It is the rolling yellow sands of the Silk Road.
It is the earth beneath the fallen hands of Edward Thomas,
who died on the battlefield, guarding the homeland’s soil and fields.
It is also the most precious and beautiful rhyme and light,
as captured in Percy Bysshe Shelley’s words—
the gifts of Mother Earth.
