PROGRAM NOTES

Pine Smoke is one of the breeds of ink of Calligraphy. It is the ash after burning the Pine tree and is then made with the blending of paint and glue. The color of Pine Smoke is in pure black with no splendid sheen and could show the interpretation between black and white in diverse way. Pine Smoke was explored in Qin and Han Dynasty (227 – 207 B.C.). The Cursive reached its greatest heights in Tang dynasty (618 – 907 A.D.) and pine smoke was also used grandly by the calligrapher at that time. The character of Cursive is more flexible and smooth than semi Cursive (Don Tsin Dynasty, 317 – 420 AD) but it’s easier to be recognized than Wild Cursive (Tang dynasty, 618 – 907 A.D.). The beauty of the Cursive by using the ink of Pine Smoke express the quaint and an abstract charm of Calligraphy. From the beginning to the end of the writing in Cursive, the breath energy is constant as well as in deep calm and peace. 

The quarter tone, the arco and pizz. in glissando symbolized the control and blending of the ink with water as well as the elegant brush strokes created by Pine Smoke. The unique sound created by using tenuto, vibrato, sul tasto, sul ponticello, col legno, the accelerando, the pizz. in unity play as well as the change of the dynamics depict the texture and image of Cursive writing with the use of Pine Smoke and the flowing breath in the writing. Especially, the contract of the dynamic’s change is the interpretation of the contract of black and white color in the ink.
